Let me begin by saying prior to this homework assignment I have never listened to a podcast, I never even knew what they were. (Sorry Marissa, I know how much you love them!) The only podcast I've ever heard of was Kail Lowry's because I watch MTV's Teen Mom but even then I barely looked into it. Then we discussed it in class more and I got the impression it was like internet radio without ads but no music. Talk about CONFUSION. At this point I think I am going to completely hate podcasts and I am dreading doing one of my own! So I decided to start with one that I can't hate entirely, Coffee Convos, since I'm obsessed with the show on MTV and don't mind binge watching some Chrisley every now and again.
My FIRST podcast EVER! Today is Monday, October 1, 2018 and I am at work while also doing my homework, multitasking at its finest. I chose to watch Coffee Convos hosted by Kail Lowry and Lindsie Chrisley. These names might sound familiar because Kail Lowry is from MTV's Teen Mom 2 and Lindsie Chrisley is the daughter of Todd Chrisley from Chrisley Knows Best. The podcast I chose was Episode 45: Pregnancy Kicks & Being Friends w/ The Opposite Sex which aired on September 13, 2018. This podcast was about their life: kids and their schools, carpool line, the typical Monday bitching, language barriers/perspectives, Halloween costumes and exclusivity, the weather, caffeine intake, being friends with the opposite sex, and a few advertisements for products. When I first started listened to this I hated it because I felt like I was eavesdropping on someone else's conversation and I felt like I was invading someone's privacy. Based off of watching Teen Mom 2, I think the audio was obtained in an open room with some high tech equipment. I think the information in this podcast was obtained differently. I think the ads were definitely scripted while the talk about their kids and Halloween costumes, and everything else they talked about was unscripted. I think they just had topics they wanted to talk about and talked openly and impromptu. I also think this is how this podcast was set up like this because when you listen to the ads you can hear the difference in their speaking compared to them talking about their lives and the weather, their tones are different. I think being unscripted worked very well with this podcast because it was very conversational and I like their tones better when they are just talking rather than when they talk about the different products their advertising. I think if their tone of voice were to sound the way it did when they are marketing these different products throughout the entire podcast then it would turn me away rather than make me want to continue to listen. One tip/trick I learned is that it is okay to be conversational which makes me feel super relieved because when I present anything I tend to be very conversational. Also, they talk to the viewers and I liked that because it makes me feel like I am part of the conversation rather than just listening to two people talk. Another thing I learned from this podcast is that it is okay to have two different views on your podcast. Kail and Lindsie agree on things but are total opposites on other things but I love to hear both views so I am definitely taking that into consideration when brainstorming my podcast.
My second podcast was referred to me by my two guy friends, Caleb and Steve, that never fail to make me laugh. WARNING: There is explicit content! I don't know why this came as a surprise to me, if you knew the guys you'd understand, because they love to laugh and make people laugh! It is called Going Deep with Chad and JT and it features Chad Kroeger and JT Parr from Chad Goes Deep. The podcast I chose was Episode 37- Strider Returns, Modern Art, Skechers which aired on September 26, 2018. The subject matter in this podcast is bad haircuts, coral, bleached hair, snorkeling trips, girlfriends, God, sharpening ambition, favorite building/structure in the world, cults, Skechers, superheros, babe of the week, and other random shit that guys talk about. I feel this podcast was obtained in the same way as Coffee Convos: non-scripted, conversational, with a few differences such as less advertisements and less talking to the audience, more swearing, more vulgar language/humor, weekly beefs, legends, babes, and quotes, along with answering listeners questions at the end of the podcast. The information in this podcast was just common knowledge from the hosts mind and everyday life. I still think that the conversational aspect of this podcast works well especially with the crude conversation and humor. I think the target audience are young adults, both working and/or in college, with the same humor (whether they admit to laughing at it or not), that can just sit back and bullshit with their friends without a filter. I think something that did not work well in this podcast, personally for me, is some of the language used in conversation because I did not know what the words meant but that does not mean someone else is going to misinterpret them. Based off my miscommunication from this podcast I learned to use common language that everyone understands and if I decide to use slang then I should define it or say what I mean by it. Another tip I picked up from this podcast is to be comfortable while talking in my podcast along with who I select to be in my podcast with me. Also I learned in this episode that it's okay to be unfiltered because people will still listen! I have to say this was a great referral, thanks guys!
My third podcast I chose to listen to was referred to me by my friend Clarissa. I did not listen to this one at work but instead in my room and then in the shower, if I am being completely honest. It is called The Brain Candy Podcast hosted by Sarah Rice and Susie Meister. The podcast I chose was Episode 259: Hip Hop Shakespeare, Female Anatomy, & Survival Tips which aired today, October 1, 2018. The subject matter of this podcast was about fall and the stereotype of pumpkin spice that comes with it, why college students aren't voting (spoiler: it's because they don't know how to buy stamps), catfish in Paris, incorporating animals and plants into cities, the Nile River, Egypt's pyramids, interest rates, how our brain reacts to trauma and survival, celebrities, knives, female anatomy, and some other random stuff. I think the information obtained in this podcast was taken from different articles and studies along with the knowledge they possess from their everyday lives. I think the audio was obtained impromptu with a checklist they follow because one of the girls mentioned a list that she follows. They also have a newsletter for their listeners to read. In this newsletter they post all the different articles they refer to in their podcast along with other random pictures and small things they mention their podcast that listeners may want to take a deeper look at. I think them mentioning the resources where they obtained all their information and putting it into a newsletter worked well because I am super curious about EVERYTHING, so if I want to dig deeper into something I will definitely check out their newsletter. I also think their honesty about not knowing everything worked well because it made me relate to them because I am not good at keeping up with the news and celebrities. One tip I took from this podcast was that it is completely acceptable to be as random as I want in my podcast! I also think an important tip/trick I can take from this podcast is that if I would continue making podcasts after this assignment to make a corresponding newsletter. Thanks for the referral Clarissa!
To wrap things up this assignment was much less painful than I anticipated. Going into Coffee Convos I hated podcasts and I wanted to throw the towel in but I'm glad I didn't because now I find myself wanting to listen to more. I want to see all of the different kinds of podcasts that are out there and what they are all about. I am nervous about the upcoming assignment to make my own in class but at the same time excited. These three podcasts are definitely inspiring and this assignment helped out more than expected.
